The Dark

The Dark - The Dark is scary when you are four, isn’t it? When you are eight? Even ten and twelve, sometimes. So what is this little book about, with its scary title and its scary cover? It’s about feeling that scariness and worrying about that scariness and about finally getting the courage to confront the scariness. How could this book go wrong with an author like Lemony Snicket and an illustrator like Jon Klassen?

French Twist: An American Mom's Experiment in Parisian Parenting

French Twist: An American Mom's Experiment in Parisian Parenting - Catherine Crawford American children are brats.(Ouch. That hurts.)That’s true. We know it is true. But it still hurts to write it down. And I’m not just talking about Other People’s Children. I’m talking the children I raised and the children I see in my work and in my life. There are, of course, a few exceptions. But by and large, American children are brats. They want to be the center of attention. They want everything they see. They are engaged in shallow pursuits. They do not respect others. They eat terrible food. They are self-centered and unhappy.Catherine Crawford has noticed that this is not true of French children. It became obvious to her that this is something she should research and share with others. So she did. And here is her book. And I like it. It’s full of ideas about ways American parents are wrong and French parents are right. (Ouch, that hurts, too, doesn’t it?) Crawford has not only researched these ideas, but she has attempted to put them into practice and they have (by and large) worked well for her.I hope, if you are a parent who is exhausted and disappointed with your overly-stylized children, that you will take a look at this book. Please. And will you give these ideas a try? Thanks. From all of us grownups who have to live with said American children.

Scent of Darkness: A Novel

Scent of Darkness: A Novel - Margot Berwin I wasn’t sure what to think about this book when it arrived on my doorstep some weeks back. I was worried that it was one of those books, like Chocolat, that goes so heavy on the senses, that bombards you with tastes or sounds or smells, that you almost feel the need to rinse your mouth or sit in a quiet chapel or spray some air freshener around. It was a sensory experience, reading this book. Happily, it wasn’t overload. On her eighteenth birthday, Eva’s grandmother places a drop of an amazing scent created just for her on Eva’s neck, and suddenly everyone is compulsively drawn to Eva. It’s a mixed blessing, as most blessing are, and Eva, though at first thrilled with this new power, gradually comes to want others to be drawn to her in spite of, rather than because of, her scent.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking - Shhh! Hey, c’mere. I know, I know, I’m whispering, but you have to when you are talking about a book like this. Quiet. It’s called Quiet. And it’s a book about all the amazing people out there, doing amazing work, but who aren’t In-Your-Face people. We forget about these people. We have, as a society, Cain writes, come to believe that everyone who is anyone is an extrovert. Cain speaks up for the quiet people, reminding us of all those who have been and are doing their quiet work, who have and are living their quiet lives, who have and are quietly eating and drinking and shopping and reading books. Being an introvert is not bad, she proclaims. Quietly, of course.

One for the Books

One for the Books - Joe Queenan Don’t you love books about books? I do. Books about books is my favorite genre. I love reading about reading. I’m a reader who loves to read about readers. I’m always searching the library shelves for books about libraries. I seek out bookstores where I can find books about bookstores. If you are like me, you will love this book. Queenan thought girls liked guys who read big books and that led him to carrying around and eventually reading lots of the world’s best books. Queenan is plenty opinionated about the books he loves, so be prepared to have him shred a few favorites here and there. But that’s okay. We know that his heart is in the right place.

The Blue Ribbon Jalapeno Society Jubilee

The Blue-Ribbon Jalapeno Society Jubilee - Carolyn Brown Do we have a name for the genre this book falls into? Women’s Fiction, but that is really too broad. How about Women’s Fiction About Women Who Join Clubs Together and Meet to Try to Figure Out Why Their Marriages Failed and Why Their Kids Are Brats? Yes. That might cover it.And we love these stories, whatever the name of their genre. The women characters in these books get together and talk about the things that just aren’t working in their lives and we readers get a chance to listen in and see if any of these folks have insights we haven’t managed to figure out for ourselves. And often these women do. And even if they don’t, sometimes it’s enough just to hear them rant and fuss about the same things we do.
